My tech journey to Learnable2020

Genesys: A beautiful place to Learn(able)

Tech is a word that I had assumed can only be linked to companies. I never knew individuals also contributed to technology development. I stopped being ignorant when I included computer science in my course of study, then I choose programming as a tool for involvement in technology development.

programming was not part of what I plan to do in life, it was a concept I did not know existed, as a matter of fact, I thought all there is to computer science is graphics and networking. Programming was a wonderful discovery for me, my interest in it arose when I saw the magic a coursemate did with code. I went from not knowing to self-learning, joined communities, attended meetups and workshops. The 3-days workshop I attended in Genesys was what started my tech journey to Learnable2020 program.

How I knew about Learnable program

I attended a 3-days workshop themed #THANG2020 in Genesys and it was there I got to know about the Learnable program.

because of Miss Angel I am feeling like i can write a book on UI/UX design, she killed and buried UI/UX. I’m so happy and grateful to have attended her class, hope to attend more of your classes in future.

The quote above was the caption I used for one of my posts https://twitter.com/IjKudirat/status/1222827343917600768 during the program. I wanted to replicate that feeling, so I wished to learn from people in Genesys because everyone there is very knowledgeable.

After the THANG experience, everyone who participated wants to intern in Genesys. We were like soldiers our morale was high and everyone was on the lookout for when the application will open. After not so long wait, the Learnable2020 application was opened and I applied.

How I made it into Learnable2020

After I applied I was sent a prep curriculum. I did not pay much attention to it which was a bad idea.

Online interview stage

When I received the mail for the online interview I was super excited, then I panicked! I had not read the curriculum after the one time I went through it. I, in panicked mode, was not funny, I was restless, tried to absorb all the information on the curriculum which was not possible.

How it went: Imagine my surprise when Jerry(Interviewer) did not mention anything about the curriculum. In fact, questions asked was random and the interview was more like a conversation between two colleagues.

How I felt at the end of this stage: I was happy the interview went well.

Online assessment stage

I was happy to receive mail for this stage and the mail specified that we should prepare very well for this stage. I was confused and lost because I did not know what to prepare for, I asked myself the following question:

if it is Maths are you prepared? my answer was yes

if it is the English language are you prepared? my answer was I can manage

if it is programming related question are you prepared? No answer

That was the problem I faced then, so I watched videos on javascript because I thought it was going to be Q/A about javascript (it is the chosen language for backend).

How it went: The first two questions were about the content of the curriculum which I answered to the best of my knowledge and understanding. I think I did well in Maths, English language and logical sections. My performance was terrible in the technical section. The reason for this was partly because I switched between my phone and laptop and my one-hour lateness for the assessment. These made me unsettled, unable to calmly read the questions and understand the task given.

How I felt at the end of this stage: I rated my performance of the assessment as poor. I had convinced myself that with my performance in the technical assessment there is no way I am getting into the learnable program. This thought was solidified when two people posted on the Genesys Tech Hub Whatsapp group that they were accepted into the learnable program the next day of the assessment then, I was more than convinced that I do not stand a chance to be accepted into the program but still I did not lose hope.

The Good News

I wish I can confidently say I knew I will be accepted into the learnable program but it was not so. After a month and a few days, I got my acceptance mail. My happiness could not be contained and I screamed for joy, God came through for me. My wish was answered, now I am one of them. Together #weAreGenesys and #EverythingIsLearnable

How the story ends

It did not end with acceptance. The learnable journey has just begun, stay tuned for updates.

Cheers to Tech!!!
